An on-going strategy to assist displaced workers and address community and economic impact is being implemented by a Community Response Team after the closure of Masonite Corporation in Algoma. Led by Kewaunee County Economic Development Corp. (KCEDC), the City of Algoma and Kewaunee County UW-Extension, the Community Response Team’s top priority is collaborating with the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) to ensure impacted employees receive assistance with training, education and opportunities for the next phase in their employment.

In January, an “Employee Transition Center” was set-up to offer employees direct access to workshops and one-on-one assistance. A job fair is being organized to match skills of the workforce with local and regional employers.  The Community Response Team will continue to explore any and all community and economic development opportunities that may support the employees, community and Masonite Corp. as the process of closure approaches and layoffs begin in March. Creating and strengthening positive partnerships with stakeholders will assist in building a healthy economic future for Kewaunee County and more specifically, the City of Algoma.
